Survey Connect
DNV | Bouvet Client
09.2019 - 09.2021
Survey connect is a large and comprehensive project which involves many stakeholders and other dependent projects. It has been a top priority in the Maritime department for two years due to its large scale and complexity. The goal of the project is to modernise a 17-year-old WIN client system into a web application. The tool supports surveyors who inspect whether ships are able to sail in accordance with both class and international rules. These rules lead to a set of complicated validations in each step of the survey process. Surveys are often carried out onboard, where in 30 % of cases there is no internet coverage, and the new application, Survey Connect should handle this with support of its mobile application Fleet Recording.
My role
UX/UI designer
As a lead UX Designer, Yuna has contributed from the planning phase and had been responsible for ensuring a holistic user experience and coordinating various design works for the product. In addition, she has assisted the product owner in defining and managing user stories and system requirements in Jira.
Yuna has played a key role in designing functional solutions in close collaboration with business and developers. During the concept development process she has held a number of workshops of varying sizes, from a couple of hours to several days. In the design process, she has delivered prototypes with various fidelities, and conducted usability tests regularly. Yuna has had a close dialogue with developers from the early concept phase to implementation for feasible development and quality assurance.
4-day workshop with 24 participants
In 2009 Yuna has facilitated a 4-day workshop where product owners, developers and end-users are invited. She has played a central role in planning and conducting of this workshop. The purpose of the workshop is to establish a shared understanding of vision and goal of the product and discover user needs to be addressed in different modules.
Managing requirements
The current desktop application has numerous functionalities and users navigate by going through each step in the survey process. Yuna has suggested to decompose the current navigation so that users have greater flexibility. It ended up with multiple modules (menus) where users can access independent of work processes. During the decomposing process it was essential to map all the functionalities available in the current application and interpret them into user stories and system requirements for the new Survey Connect app. Yuna has contributed to building backlogs together with the product owner so that the entire team gains a shared understanding of what to build.
Concept development
When users stories and system requirements are well documented Yuna has initiated multiple workshops and meetings where we can design an improved work flow. Developers, business process owners and product owners are usually invited to be able to discuss with various perspectives. Yuna has played a central role in facilitating workshops and visualising concepts in discussion.
Miro boards used in remote workshops
Due to the pandemic all the meeting and workshops have been held remotely for 1.5 years. Yuna has used Miro to facilitate various workshops and designed the boards in accordance with the purpose and topics of workshops.
Prototypes
DNV is using UXPin as their prototyping tool and it is essential for all designers in the organisation to use UXPin to get access to DNV´s design systems, OneDesign. UXPin is a powerful tool to demonstrate advanced interactions and Yuna has utilised its interaction functionalities and delivered numerous interactive prototypes. This enabled the team to verify complex concepts early in the process and avoid possible risks in the development.
